President’s Message:
June has arrived! Hopefully all of our dahlias are planted. The hardest part of our spring work is done, and now comes the fun. Watching them pop through the ground and begin to grow is just the beginning of an exciting and of course an unpredictable growing season. Soon the rewards will be received by the “oohs and ahh’s” of your gardens’ flowers and of course in our Dahlia Show. We encourage our novice growers to not be shy and to decide to exhibit in our Novice Class.
Our June educational program will consist of topping your plants, tying, fertilizing and spraying. This class is at 1:00 pm and our regular meeting at 2:00. All are welcome to attend and participate in this class. Many of our experienced members attend this class to share their knowledge in these aspects of dahlia growing. The class is an informal one with new members being encouraged to ask questions. Our members come from a wide area of our state and perhaps new members can find an experienced member who lives near them who they can visit for “mentoring with their dahlia growing.”
Marge Schnerr, our Editor and Judge’s Evaluation chairperson lives 10 minutes from our meeting site in Waterbury and offers tours of her gardens of more than 200 dahlias, either before or after our meeting on Sunday. There really is no better way of learning how to raise prize winning dahlias than to learn from someone with more than 40 years of experience. If you would like to visit her gardens on the Sunday of this meeting, or on another time, her contact information is at the end of this Newsletter, she has a number of our members who routinely stop by for growing instructions during the season and our Picnic will again be held at her home on August 11th.

DisplayGarden News:
The DisplayGarden at Elizabeth Park has been tilled and planted for another year thanks to volunteers from the society. During my most recent visit to the park several of the plants have begun to grow and are breaking through the surface of the ground. We are looking forward to another successful growing season at the park.
The park is in process of continued improvements and right now the roadway near the display garden is being replaced. Everyone should plan a trip to the park and enjoy the beauty. The roses are just coming into bloom as well.
Jesse Peterson,
DisplayGarden Coordinator
