President’s Message:

Many of us closed out the show season with the October mini-show at our last meeting. While the judges picked the best of each class, clearly every entry was a winner. Thanks to all of you that brought blooms and to the judges for their expertise.

Again this year, Dave Crockett gave us a detailed demonstration on root dividing. The timing was good as there was wide-spread killing frost just days after the meeting. Hopefully all of you have been able to dig and get your roots into storage. I’ve finished up my digging over the last few weekends and have cured them so that they are just about ready to be put away. Please remember to put some extras aside for our root sale next April.

I could not close out the season without mentioning our Elizabeth Park display garden. The plants were spectacular this year and we have to thank our dedicated volunteers for that. It takes a tremendous amount of work and time to produce such robust plants and I received many calls from park visitors thanking us for the garden. At risk of leaving someone out I want to thank Sal, Al, Jo-Ann, Dave, Susan and Matt for their help this year.

Plans have been finalized for our Annual Holiday Party. This year we will return to the Manor Inn in Plantsville for a sit-down dinner. We will have a room of good size so mark your calendars and invite a guest if you like. There will be several meal choices and the society will subsidize a part of the cost of the meal for the CDS members. Please contact Marge by November 24th so that she can send in a final count to the restaurant. Final details will be in the December newsletter.

This will be my last newsletter as president. At the November annual meeting, Donna Paternostro will take over the position and I know that she will do a great job. Please give her your support. I will continue on as vice president and show chairman.

In closing, I want to remember our dahlia friends in Connecticut and neighboring states that endured the wrath of Hurricane Sandy. We pray for their safety and well being.

Jesse Peterson,
