The Connecticut Dahlia Society
November 2013 Newsletter
Date: Sunday, November 10th, 2013
Place: Thomaston Savings Bank, 985 Watertown Avenue, Waterbury
Time: 1:00 pm, New Member’s Program: Dahlia Types & Terminology
2:00 pm, Business Meeting
I would like to thank Dave Crockett for doing our October root cutting demonstration. Our new members got first hand knowledge on how to prepare and store our precious tubers.
Also, the October Bloom Contest was the last showing of our best blooms of the season. At CDS we have five categories which give a prize of $15.00 each. It was a nice way to end our season of dahlia growing and it added a lot of color to our meeting place.
At this meeting, in addition to our New Member Program we will be discussing our annual Holiday Party. I would like to offer an advance suggestion to hold it at the San Marino Restaurant in Waterbury. The date will be Sunday, December 15th. at 1:00 pm. They are very accommodating to a small group like us and they are a very fine Italian restaurant with excellent food and excellent prices. I’ve looked into a preview of what we can expect:
They will offer a four course dinner of 3 to 4 main course choices. The cost will be approximately $20.00 to 25.00 per person including tax and tip. Their banquet menu is online at San Marino. If you have other suggestions please offer them to me by email or phone.
I hope to see you at the meeting. Meantime, happy digging and storing! Just think how well they will perform next year and surely it will make our task enjoyable.
November New Member Program:
Dahlia classification can be mind-boggling to first attendees at our show. There are 20 different forms of dahlias and 15 different color classes in each of these forms. This is why we have such an extensive number of class numbers on our tables. So for our new members it will be worthwhile to attend this meeting so that you can become familiar with these forms and have a better idea of which ones of them that you would like to grow in 2014.
